Hugh Colt

Name: Hugh Colt
Rank: Lieutenant
Usual Position: Chief Medical Officer – USS Ares
Current Status: PAST PLAYER

Appearance:

Species: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 34

Hugh has angular features with a slim, strong, and graceful build. He has occasional problems because of his service injury, but compensates with a rigorous self-imposed fitness program.

Personality:

He is efficient and focused at work, yet the time and effort he put into becoming good at medicine has left him socially isolated. In an effort to be more outgoing, he has become actively involved in off duty activities with his fellow crew. At 34, with his life experience, Hugh has matured emotionally. He has decent bedside manner yet he knows he cannot heal every one.

History:

Hugh Colt was born into a family of thinkers and dreamers where academics and deep thought were intellectual pursuits of the highest order. His father was a mathematician, his mother, a historian. Hugh didn't fit that mold, in essence, he was a maverick. While performing well enough in school, his exuberance and vitality made sport his primary interest. His love of risk and the search for the next challenge led him to become a passionate kite-surfer and cross-country runner. At age 18, unclear about what he wanted to do with his life, but anxious for adventure, he horrified his parents by dropping out of university and enlisting with the Starfleet Marines.

As a result of his upbringing, he respected the reasons other people have to live in a structured, somewhat-conservative environment. However, For Hugh, his youthful exuberance overwhelmed the safety of routine. A misguided quest for fame and glory, exacerbated by a flow of adrenaline and machismo motivated an otherwise brilliant kid to give it all up to taste the addictiveness of free-fall. Being the occasional scarcely-legal groupie hanging around the downtown haunts frequented by Starfleet cadets didn't hurt things either.

After basic training Hugh was attached to the security section at Starbase 611. His assignment was an unhappy one, with Hugh displeased at the lower standards of the Starfleet security personnel in both professional and physical training. After 3 long months, Hugh was finally transferred to a regular marine unit much to his relief. A series of routine deployments and transfers followed over the next few years. Eventually, the urge for change and action returned and at the age of 23 he applied for and passed selection to Marine Special Operations. Unfortunately, only weeks into his training with his new unit he was badly injured in a training accident.

During his recovery, Hugh experienced emotional problems and bursts of anger where he blamed everyone else for his personal misfortunes. Around this time the wards began to fill with the men and women fresh from the battlefields of the Dominion War. Surrounded by people with life changing injuries, Hugh felt humbled by their personal courage, and realized his childish bitterness was hindering his recovery rather than helping it. With fresh resolve, he decided to make something worthwhile of his life. While proud of his service with the Corps, he was more impressed with the skills of the doctors who put him and his fellow patients back together. He chose medicine as his new career as way of saying thank you and giving back.
